China Funds 232 Research Topics to Develop 3000 More Pesticide MRLs by 2020

China pledged to develop 3000 more statutory pesticide MRLs by the end of 2020. Part of the research will be conducted through a government procurement program, consisting of 232 research topics including new MRL developing, existing MRL amendment and CAC standard transformation, as well as the field trial and development of international MRLs.

On April 9th, 2020, the Chinese National Pesticide MRL Review Committee announced a government procurement program for pesticide MRL regulation development. Successful tenderers will be required to complete a series of MRL-related research and field trials within the next year.

The program consists of 232 topics:

  • 84 new MRLs will impact 63 pesticides in 36 categories of food commodities.

  • 27 MRLs are designated for amendment

  • 114 MRLs will be subject to evaluation and transformation to aligned with 678 CAC (Codex Alimentarius Commission) MRLs of 81 pesticides

  • 9 are for the development of international MRLs of 9 pesticides in 6 minor crops(Chinese featured commodities)

  • 6 are for the development of testing methods

  • 3 are for the development and revision of follow-up evaluation of existing MRLs and pesticides exempted from development.
