On March 4th 2016, the Brazil ANVISA has hosted a two-day’s panel discussion with some pesticide registration involved authorities on the paraquat occupational exposure, mutagenicity, parkinsonism and toxicological aspects relevant to the registration prohibition, which should be considered during its further reassessment.
The discussion analyzed results from the public consultation No 94/2015, suggesting following control measures on the active ingredient:
Cancelation of all toxicological evaluation report of all technical and formulated products of paraquat and its salts;
The pesticide monograph of paraquat will be temporally maintained only for food residue monitoring purpose;
The toxicological evaluation application for pesticide registration should be overruled by the agency;
The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply should suspend imports of technical and formulated paraquat products;
However the need to expand the debate on paraquat reassessment of impact on agriculture, the economy and environment was highlighted during the discussion and the conclusion will technically support the Toxicology General Administration (GGTOX) of ANVISA. Subsequently, the proposal will be discussed by the Revaluation Committee, consisting of ANVISA, MAPA and IBAMA and the conclusion on the reassessment will be submitted to ANVISA’s Collegiate Board for consideration and decision.
