China Enacts Bans on Endosulfan and Bromomethane

In accordance with the provisions contained in China Food Safety Law and the Management regulations of Agrochemicals, this new set of rules aims at fulfilling the requirements contained in the “Stockholm convention on persistent organic pollutants” and the “Copenhagen Amendment to the Montreal protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer”.

The Ministry of Agriculture made the following statements:

  • From 1st of July 2018, the registration certificate for agrochemicals containing Endosulfan products will be revoked; from 26th march 2019 the agricultural use of products containing the substance will be prohibited.

  • From 1st of January 2019, the registration of agrochemicals containing Bromomethane products will be changed by the “General Requirements for quarantine fumigation” and the agriculture utilization of products containing it will be prohibited.

  • From 1st of August 2017 the agrochemical registration for Acephate, Carbosulfan and Dimethoate (including single-agent active ingredients and compound preparations) used on vegetables, fruits, tea leaves, fungus and Chinese herbal medicine materials will be revoked and future registration applications will not be accepted and handled. In addition, from the 1st of August 2019 on, the three substances will be prohibited for the aforementioned uses.
