On 26 February 2013, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authorities (APVMA) released the preliminary review report on the fenamiphos, which proposed a ban on the insecticide/nematocide. The APVMA is inviting further submission from interested parties on the findings until 31 May 2013.
The APVMA began the review in April 2003 based on concerns relating to public health, occupational health, safety, environmental and residues in food and found that the insecticide/nematocide “may pose an undue risk to the environment and public health”. The review proposes that use on some food crops should be banned due to insufficient information to prove that fenamiphos can be used on them safely. The main food crops of concern are bananas, carrots, brassicas (broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower), ginger, parsnips, pineapples, potatoes, strawberries, tomatoes, aloe, citrus, grapes, mushrooms and sugar cane.
Currently, there are 16 fenamiphos products and 3 “Active Constituent” approvals registered in Australia and the following approvals would be reconsidered:
