On 29 Aug 2016, Brazil ANVISA published Resolution 2297 on the Official Gazette to cancel the approval of methyl parathion pesticides from the 1st of Sep 2016.
ANVISA concluded that the active ingredient falls within the criteria prohibiting registration under Brazilian Pesticide Law (LAW 7802 on 11 Jul 1989). Criteria include:
Mutagenic
Damaging to the reproductive system
Posing more risk to human than demonstrated by laboratory animal testing
Disruption to Endocrine system
The withdrawal of the pesticide was scheduled in 2015, and it was determined that all products containing parathion methyl should not be marketed after the 1st of Jun 2016. Production companies of methyl parathion should collect the remaining stocks from users within 30 to 90 days beginning on the 1st of Sep 2016. The agrochemical monograph of parathion-methyl will be maintained until 31 Dec 2017 to monitor residues in food.
