China MoARA Proposes to Ban 4 Highly Toxic Pesticides

On December 21, 2021, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs(MoARA) invited a 30-day consultation to ban 4 highly toxic pesticides: Phorate, Isofenphos-methyl, Isocarbofos, and Ethoprophos.

The Ministry explained the proposal was based on scientific risk assessment and has been carefully deliberated at the National Committee of Pesticide Registration. All registrations and production licenses of ai and formulated products will be revoked as of March 1, 2022, and all agricultural uses shall be suspended starting from March 1, 2024.

MoARA has issued 12 injunctions to ban/restrict dozens of pesticides since 2002. 46 pesticides have been completely banned from crop use and 23 pesticides have been banned in fruits, vegetables, tea, and medicinal crops.

This move is a part of MoARA’s commitment to ban 10 highly toxic pesticides by 2024, and the remaining high toxic pesticide in use are Carbosulfan, Methomyl, Aldicarb, Aluminium phosphide, Omethoate, and chloropicrin.
