China NATESC Warns against Upland Rice Pests and Diseases in Southern Regions

In an internal webinar organized by the Chinese National Agricultural Technology Extension and Service Center (NATESC) on May 12, the agronomists from southern China have exchanged the monitoring data and analyzed the situation on rice plantation and weather condition, and concluded that the total affected area of upland rice pests and diseases will be 17 million hectares nationwide in 2020. rice planthopper, Chilo suppressalis and sheath blight would be severely compared to earlier years.

Planthopper would severely outbreak in South China region and south region of the Yangtze River and moderately occur in the middle reaches of Yangtze River and slighted occur in southern part of Southwest China. The total affected area would be 4.2 million hectares;

Cnaphalocrocis medinalis would severely outbreak in South China region and south region of the Yangtze River and slightly occurred in the middle reaches of Yangtze River and the total affected area will be 3.26 million hectares;

Chilo suppressalis is rapidly developing and the total affected area will be 3.06 million hectares;

sheath blight would severely outbreak in most rice regions and the total area will be 3.93 million hectares;

NATESC pointed out that most of the pests have hatched or immigrated earlier than usual and most of the upland rice planted are susceptible varieties, while the excess rainfall in May would be another contributor.
