Brazil MAPA Updated Priority List of Products for Pesticide Registration Review

On 14th Mar 2016, the Brazil Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) updates the “ List of Pesticide Products for Priority Registration Review”, which includes the trade name, applicant and composition, proposed crop and pest of totally 68 pesticide products.

The priority list was compiled under established criteria issued by the Department Agricultural Input Surveillance (DFSA) of MAPA on 22th January 2016, which stipulated that the inclusion into the priority list should be made under following considerations:

  • New product featured for specifically listed pest will be considered;

  • The me-too product which allows greater market competitiveness (considering the number of registrant of the active ingredient, the availability of formulated product to farmers);

  • IF the technical product was registered for its formulation, the priority will be necessary and automatically accounted;

  • The Brazilian home manufactured/formulated pesticides will be granted preference;

  • If the product was intended for the control of pests/disease of greatest economic concern in Brazil(known as priority pest);

Totally 68 products for 12 pests/diseases were included into the priority list, consisting of 71 items for priority review and each item has been designated with a priority level from 0 to 9 according to the number of the products targeting for each priority pest. Product that already in evaluation process and with emergency registration will be rated as level 0 and the level 1 to 9 were designated to other products based on their application area and following factors:

  • Novel technology;

  • Combination of active ingredients;

  • Brazilian indigenous manufacturers/formulators;

  • Operation capability of the authorities for the analysis of new technology;

  • Number of benefited crops;

  • Chronological order of submission;

MAPA pointed out that two pesticides based on new active ingredient were given considerable preference: BASF’s metaflumizone intended for control of two priority pests and ADAMA’s fluensulfone is the unique product for nematodes (pratylenchus brachyurus). In the next release of the product priority list, products based on these active ingredients with the same usage will be considered to have the same technological novelty and the final priority level will be determined by chronological order of the submission.
